Business Eye and Chartered Accountants Ireland host Round Table discussion on Future Talent Pipeline

A recent roundtable discussion, hosted by Business Eye and Chartered Accountants Ireland, brought together key figures from accountancy and education to address an urgent issue: the shortage of young talent entering the profession. The Chartered Accountants Ireland Ulster Society’s survey revealed that 75% of members struggle with recruitment and retention, prompting an in-depth discussion at Belfast’s Custom House.

The discussion highlighted a major obstacle; the outdated perception of accountancy as dull or limited in scope. In reality, chartered accountants hold leadership roles across industries, from finance to tech and ESG. Changing this perception is crucial, with parents and career advisors playing a significant role in influencing young people’s choices.

Several participants emphasised the need to expand entry routes. Ian Browne of Chartered Accountants Ireland noted a shift post-COVID, with initiatives like Project Athena increasing student numbers by 10%. The success of apprenticeship programs, particularly those partnering with Ulster University, has demonstrated that non-traditional pathways can attract ambitious and driven individuals.

Flexibility in training and working conditions was another key theme. While the profession is evolving, retaining talent in practice remains a challenge as many accountants transition into industry or tech roles. Employers must balance traditional training models with modern expectations, ensuring young accountants feel engaged from the outset.

The discussion concluded with a call to action; improving communication with schools, parents, and SMEs about the diverse opportunities within accountancy. Increasing awareness of apprenticeships, expanding visa options for international talent, and modernizing professional development will be essential in building a sustainable talent pipeline.

The message is clear, accountancy offers a dynamic and rewarding career. The challenge now is to ensure the next generation sees it that way too.
